San Javier cheese factory awarded artisan company status
The Quesos Ruperto cheese factory in El Mirador makes and packages its delicious products by hand
The Quesos Ruperto cheese factory in El Mirador,
San Javier, has been accredited as an artisan company, a prestigious award that not only acknowledges the factory's artisanal production methods but also opens up opportunities for the company to access subsidies for participating in fairs, investing in new machinery and technologies and developing its online presence.
The recognition was formally presented to the factory's owners during a visit by Rafael Gómez, General Director of Promotion of Commerce, Business Innovation and Craft Industries and Crafts, accompanied by Mayor José Miguel Luengo and Councillor for Commerce, Isabel Madrid.
Mr Gómez explained that the artisan business card “allows you to qualify for the line of subsidies that the General Directorate has to participate in promotion at fairs as well as subsidies for investment in machinery, new technologies digitalisation and online commerce."

Llorema Madrid, the master cheese maker behind Quesos Ruperto, expressed her gratitude for the recognition, stating that it “will allow us to continue moving forward, exhibiting and promoting our products to make ourselves known more and more.”
Quesos Ruperto’s commitment to artisanal production is evident in its use of fresh milk from its own sheep, which is carefully crafted into a range of delicious cheeses using traditional techniques.
This hands-on process begins with molding and continues in the chamber with turning, cleaning and brushing, during the maturation process, culminating with wrapping and packaging, also entirely done by hand.
Mayor José Miguel Luengo congratulated the team at Quesos Ruperto on their achievement.
“We are very proud of how much they have been able to achieve in such a short time,” he said.
He also highlighted the company's impressive track record. In 2023, Quesos Ruperto was among the 17 best cheeses in Spain, with two SuperGold in the World Cheese Awards, the ‘Oscars of Cheese’, for two types of its Abuelo Ruperto Cheese.
Mr Luengo concluded by saying that Quesos Ruperto has successfully established itself in reputable points of sale and restaurants, bringing the name of the municipality to the world of regional and national gastronomy.
