ARCHIVED - Sanchez opens the door to ending mask-wearing in Spain
The rate of vaccination in Spain means the measure will be considered “sooner rather than later”
The president of the Spanish government, Pedro Sánchez, gave his clearest message to date that wearing masks indoors might soon be coming to an end following a meeting with the Prime Minister of Denmark on Monday February 21. While avoiding setting a definitive timeline, the president said that he will take into account the opinions of the experts before adding: “We will open that door when appropriate.”
The Chief Executive made these statements from the Moncloa Palace, after his meeting with Mette Frederiksen, whose country lifted all Covid restrictions at the beginning of the month.
“We have shared that, effectively, the necessary condition [to repeal the indoor mask] is to have a vaccination percentage like the one that Spanish or Danish societies have,” Mr Sánchez said.

After a notable slowdown in the vaccination campaign in recent weeks, Spain has thus far double jabbed 91% of the population, while 49.7% of people have now received the booster dose. While Denmark is behind Spain with regard to second inoculations (81.7%) it has seen far more success in the uptake of the third (62%).
Spain’s president made the announcement on a day in which all of the important Covid indicators reduced significantly; over the weekend, the cumulative incidence rate plummeted 133 points to reach just 786 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
Denmark is not the only European country to scrap indoor masks; Sweden and the United Kingdom have recently abolished the measure while on February 28, masks will no longer be required in establishments in France that request a vaccination passport. Poland intends to do away with the restriction next month.
Mr Sánchez refused to give a specific date on which indoor masks will be abolished, but he did confirm that the debate will be held within the Interterritorial Health Council “sooner rather than later”.
