ARCHIVED - Sanchez pushes for agreement between the UK and EU over Gibraltar
British ministers have accused the EU of undermining the UK’s sovereignty over Gibraltar
Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Wednesday September 22, the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez said he was confident that an agreement would be reached “shortly” between the EU and the UK on Gibraltar’s post-Brexit status.
Spain and UK struck a last-minute deal as the Brexit deadline loomed on December 31 2020, ensuring that there would be no hard border in Gibraltar and implementing checks only at the port and airport, essentially treating the Rock as part of the Schengen zone. However, the agreement was only temporary and negotiations to develop a permanent international treaty have repeatedly met roadblocks.
UK Minister Wendy Morton has accused the EU of undermining the UK’s sovereignty over Gibraltar by supporting Spanish officials in carrying out the border checks rather than independent company Frontex, something which she insists goes against all previous agreements. In addition, the minister is worried about Spanish authorities having the power to issue visas and residency for Gibraltar, as well as controlling the day-to-day law enforcement of the territory.
Despite claims that the UK is preparing for a no-deal scenario, President Sánchez told the Assembly that he is sure that both parties are ready to take a step forward to close the matter once and for all. Spain’s main priority now, he said, is to focus on the social and economic prosperity of Gibraltar.
