ARCHIVED - Scam alert in Spain over seed oil being sold as olive oil
The oil has been sold in Murcia and elsewhere in Spain and can pose a serious health risk
Authorities in the Region of Murcia have warned of a scam involving the sale of supposed olive and extra virgin olive across Spain which is actually vegetable oil made from seeds, or a mixture of seeds, and which could pose a significant health risk.
According to the Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (Aesan), the majority of the suspect oil has been distributed around Murcia, but supplies have also been traced to Catalonia, the Basque Country and the Valencian Community, and so the counterfeit product could have made its way much farther afield.
The war in Ukraine has interrupted the supply of sunflower oil to Spain, and many supermarkets have had to ration supplies and even install special security systems for the item. As a result, the price of olive oil has shot up by 53.6% in recent months, and these clandestine operations have sprung up.
