ARCHIVED - Scorcher of a weekend ahead: Spain weather outlook July 28-31
Higher than normal temperatures and tropical nights are forecast across Spain for the next few days
Many regions of Spain are enjoying a couple of relatively cool days in the middle of this week but the heat is set to return over the weekend in a new “warm episode” that should see the thermometers register between 5 and 10 degrees higher than normal, according to Aemet.
As well as sizzling in the daytime, people living in central Spain or in the far south will have to suffer through a couple of tropical nights with temperatures in excess of 20ºC, while a few storms are still possible in the north-east on Saturday and Sunday.
While it’s still impossible to say whether the weekend weather will turn into yet another heatwave, an Aemet spokesperson confirmed that the "high temperatures will continue during the first fortnight of August", while some storms could make an appearance in the north and along the southern coast.
Thursday July 28
Thursday is going to be a pretty mixed day, with high temperatures in the south and probable shower and strong storms in the north-east. There will be a notable drop in temperature in the Canary Islands while the mercury will continue to rise in the south.
Highlighting the unsettled nature is the Valencian Community, which is on alert both for extreme heat and heavy rain.
Minimum and maximum temperatures on Thursday:
Alicante: 24ºC; 32ºC
Almeria: 23ºC; 31ºC
Malaga: 24ºC; 30ºC
Murcia: 24ºC; 36ºC
Friday July 29
Very little change on Friday, with the mercury continuing to rise slightly in the extreme south. The day will begin cloudy in most regions and showers and even isolated storms are forecast in Aragón, Catalonia and the north of the Valencian Community.
Minimum and maximum temperatures on Friday:
Alicante: 22ºC; 33ºC
Almeria: 23ºC; 30ºC
Malaga: 24ºC; 30ºC
Murcia: 22ºC; 37ºC
Saturday July 30
Things will kick up a gear on Saturday with a rise in the mercury across practically all of Spain. The thermometers will easily hit 35ºC in central areas, along the west coast and in the extreme south, while 40ºC should be exceeded in the Tagus, Guadiana and Guadalquivir valleys.
Minimum and maximum temperatures on Saturday:
Alicante: 24ºC; 33ºC
Almeria: 25ºC; 37ºC
Malaga: 25ºC; 29ºC
Murcia: 25ºC; 35ºC
Sunday July 31
The real heat will hit on Sunday, when areas in the south of Galicia, especially the Miño Valley, will be 10 degrees warmer than usual for this time of year. Along the west coast, the maximums will be between 5 and 10 degrees higher than normal while in the east and the Balearic Islands, the heat will be more typical of the summer season.
Minimum and maximum temperatures on Sunday:
Alicante: 24ºC; 33ºC
Almeria: 26ºC; 36ºC
Malaga: 24ºC; 30ºC
