Marie Riley, a 37-year-old woman from Paisley, Scotland, has died following an incident just hours after she arrived for a holiday with her wife in the popular Spanish resort of Benidorm on Monday March 7.
A spokesperson for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) said, "We are assisting the family of a British woman following an incident in Benidorm and in contact with the Spanish authorities." It has not been specified what the incident was, nor the cause of death.
On Monday, Ms Riley had travelled with her wife, Lynne, and other friends to spend their holidays in Spain, when tragedy struck.
Lynne announced the news on Facebook the next day, prompting an outpouring of sympathy from friends and family.
Pals flooded Facebook with tributes to Paisley woman Marie, who was described as "a beautiful lassie", "an amazing person" and "genuinely one in a million".
Their neighbour Charlene Mullen shared a heartfelt post on Facebook addressed to Marie: "We started as neighbours and grew to become best friends. The laughter, jokes & sometimes cries we shared around the garden fire will live with me forever.
"I cannot believe I will never see you again. I am absolutely devastated for your wife. We will love you forever. Rest easy beautiful."
