ARCHIVED - Second child, 9 months old, dies of smoke inhalation from Madrid explosion
The nine-month-old baby is the second child in the same family to die from the accident, while the mother remains in hospital in a serious condition

The 9-month-old baby who was hospitalised in a serious condition after an explosion in Alcorcón, Madrid last week has died, five days after his 5-year-old brother also died of smoke inhalation, as confirmed by sources at Madrid’s La Paz Hospital.
The explosion happened last Thursday at around 7.15pm in Calle Oslo, number 45, with the subsequent fire spreading smoke to the apartments above. The worst affected was the family of three who lived directly above the storefront where the explosion took originated.
The youngest boy, not yet 1 year old, was taken to La Paz by Summa-112 ambulance services with a serious prognosis, in cardiorespiratory arrest due to smoke inhalation.
His older brother, 5, was pronounced dead at the scene of the blast.
The mother of the two boys, 30 years old, also went into cardiac arrest and herself taken to Getafe Hospital in serious condition.
Police have ruled out their initial hypothesis that the tragic fire was due to a gas leak, and now believe that it was caused by a spark from a generator that ignited an insulating material while work was being carried out to turn the storefront into a restaurant.
