Shakira faces a new tax investigation in Spain
A Barcelona court has agreed to open a case against the Colombian singer’s alleged tax fraud in 2018
There’s fresh stress for Colombian pop sensation Shakira as a Spanish court has opened yet another claim against her alleged tax fraud this week. The ‘Hips Don’t Lie’ singer is already facing eight years behind bars for dodging 14.5 million euros in income tax while residing in Spain between 2021 and 2014.
Shakira maintains she has always correctly paid her taxes and followed the advice of top experts, and claims she was only visiting Spain at the time and so doesn’t owe the Spanish Treasury anything. However, the prosecutors insist they have damning evidence to the contrary, including frequent social media posts and credit card statements.
The latest case against the singer involves two possible cases of tax fraud relating to 2018, although the amount of money in question hasn’t been released. Shakira’s lawyers have refused to comment on the accusations until she receives formal notification of the charges against her.
“[Shakira] is now focused on her artistic career in Miami and is calm and confident that she will receive a favourable resolution of her fiscal issues,” the firm said.
Shakira moved to the States after splitting from long-term partner Gerard Piqué and immortalised his reported cheating in a scathing song with Argentinian producer Bizarrap, which broke YouTube records within 24 hours of being released.
