ARCHIVED - Shakira faces jail over 14 million euro tax fraud in Spain
The pop sensation has lost her appeal and will be tried for crimes against Spain’s Tax Agency

Colombian pop star Shakira has lost an appeal this Thursday May 26 and will now stand trial for allegedly defrauding millions of euros from the Spanish Tax Agency. If convicted, the singer could face a lengthy jail sentence and a substantial fine.
The ‘Hips Don’t Lie’ singer stands accused of dodging a 14.5 million euro income tax bill while she was living in Spain between 2012 and 2014, and her financial adviser is also being targeted for helping the star to avoid paying wealth tax by setting up a corporate network in her name.
Prosecutors believe that Shakira has been living in the Catalonia region of Spain since she began a relationship with FC Barcelona soccer club defender Gerard Pique, even though the singer maintains she was a permanent resident in the Bahamas until 2015. However, the Spanish court saw “sufficient evidence” through her social networks, bills and credit cards to send her to trial.
Following the ruling, Shakira’s legal team insisted that she met all of her tax obligations since obtaining residency in Spain.
“Shakira’s conduct on tax matters has always been impeccable in all the countries she had to pay taxes and she has trusted and followed faithfully the recommendations of the best specialists and advisers,” the statement said.
A date for the trial has yet to be set.
