Sharon Corr blasts Ryanair for refusing to let her board flight from Spain
The Irish musician was travelling home from Madrid for a series of gigs in the UK and Spain
Irish singing sensation Sharon Corr took to social media earlier this week to slam Ryanair for refusing to let her board a flight from Spain to her home country, claiming she was left in tears and feeling utterly “humiliated” in front of hundreds of other passengers at the gate.
The ‘Runaway’ star, 54, currently lives in Madrid but she was planning to fly to Ireland with her trusty violin in order to prepare for upcoming July tour dates in the UK and Spain with her siblings, the other members of musical group ‘The Corrs’.
However, when Sharon arrived at the boarding gate with her violin, after already checking in her other bags, she was told the instrument constituted extra luggage and would have to paid for separately.
After pleading her case with Ryanair ground staff, Sharon eventually left the airport, and presumably booked a different flight.
She posted about the ordeal on her social media page, writing: “Today I was booked on a Ryanair flight. I got up at 6 in the morning. I was not allowed on the flight because I had my violin.
“I was in the airport for 7 hours. I had to return home after searching for my checked in bags. Humiliated, angry, then crying as only a good woman can do.
“Why was I going to Dublin? My home turf, to rehearse, to go on tour! I’m beyond disappointed. Michael O’Leary shame on you.”
Now, while Ryanair’s luggage policies aren’t always the most lenient, the airline is pretty clear about the rules, and musical instruments can be brought on board as long as they meet the standard carry-on baggage size allowance.
However, the budget carrier insists that Sharon’s violin was simply too large.
“This passenger was not refused travel from Madrid to Dublin (30 Jun),” a Ryanair spokesperson stressed.
“This passenger’s violin exceeded the cabin bag dimensions permitted for her flight, and therefore was required to pay a standard gate baggage fee to place it in the hold of the aircraft.
“This passenger refused to pay the standard fee and instead chose not to travel on this flight.”
