Ship loaded with explosives to manufacture weapons is planning to dock in the Port of Cartagena
Various people have claimed that the cargo ship is carrying material used for war in Israel
The cargo ship Yangze Venus, which is known to be carrying high explosives and destined for the Rheinmetall company, will stop at the Port of Cartagena in the next few days. The explosives on board are believed to be used to manufacture ammunition for the Spanish Armed Forces and possibly for the Israeli army.
Many different groups of people who disagree with the stopover have raised the alert that the ship and the weapons could be on route to Israel. This trade of weapons however is not illegal and is within the rights of the Spanish armed forces.
The Spanish company that is manufacturing the weapons and explosives belongs to a German subsidiary that creates all types of projectiles, fuses, casings and bombs. It exports its products to the armies of Turkey and Israel, as well as being one of the suppliers of the Spanish Armed Forces.
Moreover, a few weeks ago, the US maritime agency warned Spain that it would impose heavy fines and ban Spanish ships from entering US ports if they ban selling weapons to Israel.
Last year the government of Spain banned the Marianne Danica from stopping in Cartagena, because it was carrying explosives bound for Haifa, Israel. The reason for this decision on the part of Spain was that a wave of international protests swept across Europe as a result of the war in Gaza.
The Americans did not agree with this stance and as a result threatened the Spanish Government. Pedro Sánchez's government responded that its ban did not at the time violate international law.
Furthermore, this is not the first time that a cargo ship has had problems docking in the port of Cartagena this year. Back in May another ship failed to dock in the Spanish port amid claims that it was transporting weapons to Israel.
