ARCHIVED - Six cases of anthrax in animals confirmed in Extremadura
One person in Extremadura is also being treated for the infectious disease
The Animal Health Service of the Junta de Extremadura has confirmed that it has discovered six cases of anthrax in animals in the province of Badajoz. Anthrax is a serious infectious disease which can affect humans if they come into contact with spores from infected animals.
All of the current cases were detected in the Don Benito area in recent weeks, and the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food is continuously monitoring the situation. The anthrax cases have been discovered in three horses and two cows.
According to the Ministry, an additional case in cattle has since been notified in nearby Talarrubias. Four days after confirming the first case in animals, the Ministry of Health reported that a person from the Don Benito area had become infected with cutaneous anthrax and was undergoing antibiotic treatment against the disease. Sources have indicated that the case was mild and that so far no more cases have been detected in humans.
