ARCHIVED - SmartLagoon system installed to monitor Mar Menor water quality
The device checks the water that flows between the Mediterranean Sea and the Mar Menor

Researchers from the UCAM University in Murcia and Swiss company Photrack have installed two new cameras under the Estacio and Marchamalo bridges, which are situated at either end of La Manga.
The cameras form part of the SmartLagoon project which, for the first time ever, allows scientists to measure the quality of the water that passes between the Mar Menor and the Mediterranean Sea in real time.
There are actually five channels between the salt-water lagoon and the sea, but the two in La Manga were chosen specifically because they exchange the greatest volume of water.
Javier Senent, principal investigator of the project, explained that "knowing in real time and continuously the exchange of water that is taking place between the Mar Menor and the Mediterranean Sea is essential to reduce the uncertainty associated with the water balance of the lagoon, since after evaporation, this exchange of water is the most important from a quantitative point of view”.
