ARCHIVED - Spain advances booster jab to everyone over the age of 18
Wait time between second and third doses has been reduced to five months in Spain
The general directors of Public Health of the Ministry met on Thursday morning, January 13 and made a number of important decisions regarding the coronavirus pandemic. First amongst them was the guarantee that pharmacies will be allowed to charge a maximum of 2.94 euros for over-the-counter antigen tests in an effort to maintain the affordability of this important tool.
The second change has been made in relation to the availability of the coronavirus booster vaccine, which until now was only offered to those aged 40 years or older. With the new decree, everyone above the age of 18 will be entitled to the third jab in Spain.
The booster dose is always a Pfizer or Moderna vaccine, regardless of what has been previously administered. It is important to note that anyone immunised with the Janssen mono-jab can make an appointment in Spain for their third vaccine while those who originally received AstraZeneca only have a wait of three months for their booster.
Finally, the Ministry of Health has announced that people who were vaccinated with either Pfizer or Moderna will now only have to wait five months for their third shot, rather than six, as research has shown that this is the point at which protection from the virus begins to wane.
