ARCHIVED - Spain sets price cap of 2.94 euros on pharmacy antigen tests
The lower price for Covid tests will come into effect in Spain on Saturday January 15
The Interministerial Drug Price Commission (CIMP) has unanimously agreed on Thursday January 13 that the maximum sale price of Covid self-diagnostic antigen tests in pharmacies will be 2.94 euros as of this Saturday.
The debate was generated by a huge supply shortage over the Christmas period which caused stockists to hike up the price of over-the-counter kits to as much as 10 or 12 euros, and the government was put under pressure to regulate the cost, as has been done in several other European countries.
“The debate we had before or during this Christmas has been, above all, about the supply of these tests; there was an exponential increase in demand but not in supply,” President Sanchez said before the meeting. “This issue has already been resolved; now we will take control of the price of antigen tests.”
Earlier in the week the PP had called on the government to set the price of at-home kits to just two euros and to make them free for low-income families, while other political parties have demanded that antigens be available for sale in supermarkets and larger stores.
While acknowledging that a price reduction was needed, the government is standing firm on its decision to only allow tests to be sold in pharmacies.
