ARCHIVED - Spain and Portugal favourites to host 2030 World Cup
UEFA Chief is “sure” the 2030 competition will come to Spain and Portugal

Spain and Portugal launched a joint bid two years ago to host the 2030 World Cup, an agreement that was made official in June, and this ambitious dream is one step closer to becoming a reality as UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin said earlier this week that the Iberian nations are, in his opinion, the clear favourites.
"I am sure that the 2030 World Cup will be played in Spain and Portugal," Ceferin commented during the opening of the Football Talks international congress in Lisbon on Monday September 5.
"This bid is a winning one and we will do everything possible to help two countries that are passionate, live and breathe football and that have a good infrastructure."
Spain hasn’t hosted the World Cup since 1982 and a similar proposal with its Portuguese neighbours in 2018 failed to win backing. Although Portugal hosted the 2004 European Championship, it has yet to stage the World Cup.
Both nations have a lot to offer the FIFA judging panel, which will convene in May 2024: Portugal will submit three stadiums for consideration while Spain has no fewer than 11 suitable venues.
Competition, however, remains stiff. While a bid between the UK and Ireland and another with Bulgaria, Serbia, Greece and Romania have reportedly been dropped from the race, rumours persist that China might still throw its hat in the ring, and an alliance between Morocco, Saudi Arabia and Egypt is also being contemplated.
The most likely contender though is the South American four-way bid of Argentina, Uruguay, Chile and Paraguay, which holds special significance since Uruguay hosted the very first World Cup back in 1930.
This year’s World Cup will be hosted by Qatar, followed by the United States, Canada and Mexico in 2026.
