ARCHIVED - Spain braces itself for the coldest February weekend in years
Parts of Spain will see the mercury drop to -10ºC this weekend as the cold front settles in
Mid-week forecasts from the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) warned that most of Spain could expect a sharp return to wintery weather this coming weekend but as the unpredictable DANA (an isolated depression at high levels) settles over the country, the forecast too has evolved.
Already in the early hours of Friday morning (February 24) several towns in northern Spain have endured fierce winter weather but before the day is out, the frigid temperatures will hit the rest of the country, with many regions expected to descend to an incredible -10ºC before the weekend is out.
In the last few hours, the DANA has combined with a mass of cold air that will result in even more unstable weather in mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands than was originally forecast.
While the next couple of days will be nippy, the real polar impact will be felt late at night, when the minimum temperatures will drop way below normal for this time of year. In fact, this Friday and Saturday, the mercury will record values “located in the 5% of the coldest recorded for these dates in the period 1991-2020,” according to Aemet.
But the worst is yet to come, Meteored experts warn, predicting that "the polar air mass is already upon us and has reversed the situation of recent weeks." What’s more, nighttime temperatures over the next few days will plummet between 10 and 15ºC below normal.
It looks like the wintery weather will extend beyond the weekend too, as Monday February 27 is also expected to be bitterly cold: "There is a second round of cold irruption, which will arrive through the Pyrenees on Monday. It is expected to be even stronger and more extensive in the northeast. The minimum temperatures could drop to -20ºC at high levels of the Pyrenees and values of up to -15 ºC in the valleys," according to the meteorologists.
This second burst of cold air will also cause frost in large areas of inland Spain and even in coastal areas of Catalonia.
