ARCHIVED - Spain calls for dialogue and diplomacy between the US and China
The Spanish Government has advised against any “military measures”
The Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, has urged China and the United States towards “dialogue and diplomacy” amid rising tensions following the visit of the speaker of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, to Taiwan last week.
"We are with the maintenance of the status quo in the Taiwan Strait, as we also have a very clear position favourable to the one-China policy, but everything that escalates military measures never leads to anything positive," Mr Albares said on Saturday August 6.
China has believed in “reunifying” Taiwan with the People’s Republic ever since the island assumed independence in 1949 following a civil war, which culminated in a transition to democracy in the 1990s.
Although there is no official agreement between the US and Taiwan, Ms Pelosi's visit has caused uproar in China, particularly since Washington is technically the island’s main arms supplier and would be its greatest ally in the case of a military invasion.
