ARCHIVED - Spain Covid update December 2: Infections in young children soar
Hospitalisations, infections and the incidence rate have all risen in Spain this week
As the festive season fast approaches the coronavirus data in Spain appears to be going from bad to worse, forcing many communities to implement a Covid passport system and prompting the government to demand vaccination certificates from all those entering the country from the UK in an attempt to stem the spread of the Omicron variant.
On Thursday December 2, the Ministry of Health confirmed that the all-important cumulative incidence rate has jumped another 17 points, and Health Secretary Silvia Calzon pointed out that this figure “is especially concentrated in those under 12 years of age”. For this reason, the authorities plan to begin rolling out the Pfizer jab to younger children before Christmas.
Covid infections
Across the autonomous communities, a further 14,500 new cases of coronavirus have been registered, 8,339 of which were diagnosed in the last 24 hours. This is a very significant increase on the 9,258 infections reported on the same day last week and brings the total number of people who have contracted the virus since the beginning of the pandemic to 5,189,220.
Cumulative incidence rate
This figure also continues its upward trend, with the latest 14-day rate standing at 234.03 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, up from 217.1 cases on Wednesday.
The cumulative incidence in children under the age of 12 is now 390.06, while those over 80 now have the lowest rate, at 120 cases.
Navarra continues to top the list with 676.80 cases per 100,000 residents, while Extremadura now has the lowest rate in the entire country, at 105.26 infections.
Andalucía’s incidence rate has also shot up to 111.42, while the Region of Murcia and the Valencian Community remain above the national average, with 249.99 and 257.66 cases respectively.
Hospitalisations
There are currently 4,093 patients being treated in hospital for Covid, with 772 people in the ICU for more serious symptoms. A direct indicator of hospital pressure, the bed occupancy rate is steadily climbing, and now Covid patients account for 8.39% of intensive care beds.
In the last 24 hours, 563 people have been admitted to hospital while 409 patients have been discharged.
Fatalities
The Ministry of Health has registered 42 more deaths on Thursday, while 131 people have died in the last seven days. This brings the overall death toll in Spain to 88,122.
Vaccination data
Spain has administered the first dose to 91.1% of the target population (38,379,778 people) while 89.4% (37,638,438 people) are now fully vaccinated.
The booster dose has now been given to 5,289,482 people and 65.8% of those aged 70 or over have received their third jab.
Omicron variant
Five cases of the South African Omicron variant have now been confirmed in Spain, although the health authorities have stressed that the Delta strain is still the dominant one.
