ARCHIVED - Spain Covid update November 25: ICU pressure begins to climb
Hospitalisations due to Covid have risen sharply in Spain in the past week
The coronavirus pandemic continues to sink its teeth into Spain and although the figures here are better than in much of Europe, cases are rising with worrying regularity. The autonomous communities continue to battle it out with the Ministry of Health over the issue of extending the use of the Covid passport while the coronavirus traffic light system has been altered upwards so that regions can avoid implementing restrictions for as long as possible.
Cumulative incidence rate
The 14-day figure has risen 11 more points in the last 24 hours to reach 160 cases per 100,000 inhabitants on Thursday November 25. While still no cause for alarm, the incidence has jumped considerably, from 104 cases on the same day last week.
Navarra’s figures continue to skyrocket, and the incidence now sits at a dangerous 462 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. The Community of Valencia and the Region of Murcia are both above the national average, with 167 and 171 cases respectively, while Andalucía is keeping things relatively stable with 82 cases.
The age group most affected continues to be those under the age of 11, with a cumulative rate of more than 252 cases. This could all be about to change, however, as this week the European Medicines Agency has given the green light to administering lower doses of the Pfizer jab to children aged between 5 and 11 years old.
Covid infections
Sadly, the number of daily infections is at its highest since the beginning of September, with 9,258 cases reported, 5,541 of which were diagnosed in the last 24 hours. This is a jump from the 6,315 cases registered on the same day last week and brings the total number of people infected with Covid since the beginning of the pandemic to 5,121,100.
Fatalities
The Ministry of Health has notified of 27 more Covid-related fatalities, with 93 deaths registered in the last seven days. Overall, 87,931 people have lost their lives since the health crisis began.
Hospitalisations
There are currently 3,273 patients admitted to hospitals suffering from coronavirus throughout Spain, 571 of whom are being treated for more serious cases in the ICU. The occupancy rate of beds stands at 2.63% but has risen to 6.22% in intensive care, which is above the WHO’s 5% barrier at which the virus is considered ‘controlled’.
Diagnostic tests
Between November 15 and 21, the autonomous communities have carried out 748,191 PCR and antigen tests, resulting in a positivity rate of 5.80%, which is once again above the WHO’s threshold of 5%.
Vaccination data
As of November 25, 89.2% of Spain’s population over the age of 12 (37,578,516 people) have now been fully vaccinated, while 90.9%, or 38,281,333 people have received one dose.
A booster dose has now been administered to 3,955,506 people overall, and 55.6% of those aged over 70 have received the third jab.
