ARCHIVED - Spain, Croatia and Ireland voted best countries in the word to retire to
Spain came up trumps in terms of its climate, healthcare facilities and general safety
With the cost of living crisis deepening across the globe and the UK reportedly on the brink of another recession, the number of people looking to begin a new life in the sun when they reach retirement age has exploded. Searches for “best country to retire to from the UK” have risen 94.1% in the last 12 months, according to pension provider Penfold, and Croatia, Spain and the Republic of Ireland have come out on top as the destinations of choice this year.
The research shows that 12% of people over the age of 50 in the UK are hoping to retire abroad, with the exchange rate, quality of healthcare and average yearly temperature key factors in determining where they choose to hang their hat.
Croatia
With 21% of its population over 65, Croatia was voted the best country in the world to retire to. The British pound goes a lot further here, and the cost of living is attractively low, with rent prices around half what they are in the UK.
Keeping in touch with family and friends was also an important consideration, so a short flight time of just over two hours, along with pretty cheap tickets, bagged Croatia first place.
Overall, Croatia scored 28.47 within the Cost of Living Index, compared to the UK’s 46.42.
Spain
Coming in at number two is the Brit’s long-time favourite holiday destination: Spain. The sunny weather and mild climate are just two of the many reasons it’s remained so popular over the years. For retirees, healthcare is vital, and Spain’s national system is reasonably priced and ranked among some of the best in the world.
But where the Iberian nation really came up trumps was in terms of quality of life. It scored one of the highest figures in general happiness and achieved an impressive 83 out of 100 on the World Safety Index.
Republic of Ireland
Entering the ranks at number 3 and a bit of a wildcard is the Republic of Ireland. Although no one can claim they’d like to retire to the Emerald Island because of the climate, Ireland is reportedly one of the happiest and safest countries to move to.
Unlike some countries with extremely complicated and expensive visa processes, expats moving to Ireland need have only 7,000 euros in their bank accounts and while it’s known to be a little on the pricey side, it has some of the best healthcare facilities, scoring far higher than the UK.
