ARCHIVED - Could this be the hottest October in Spanish history?
Another blast of heat at the end of the month is likely to break the record in Spain
With only a few days left in October, autumn shows no signs of rearing its head, and the beaches in Spain are still thronged with toasty sunbathers. Although a double whammy of storms brought a considerable drop in temperature and some torrential rain last week, the final stretch of the month is set to be a scorcher.
So good is the forecast that the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) is already gearing up to declare this October the hottest in history, but of course, we won’t know this for sure until the beginning of November.
“We do not rule out that this October will be the warmest in Spain in the historical series,” an Aemet spokesperson said, adding that the temperatures are “very unusual for the time” of year.
With cities in the south of Spain like Murcia and Seville still basking in temperatures well over 30ºC this week, it certainly looks like a distinct possibility. To be crowned the warmest October ever, it would have to top the same month in 2014 and 2017, when average temperatures of 18.7ºC and 18.5ºC were registered.
The unseasonably warm spell is likely to extend beyond this month too, according to Aemet: “Clearly warmer-than-normal conditions are likely to continue into the first half of November.”
For the next week or so at least, clear and sunny weather will predominate, with heavy rain only blotting the landscape in Galicia, Castilla y León and Extremadura. In the coming days the thermometers are expected to be between 5 and 10ºC warmer than usual, with Murcia again breaking records and reaching a scorching 32ºC.
More unusual is the fact that much of the country is still experiencing tropical nights in the middle of autumn, as the mercury is unlikely to dip below 20ºC in the Mediterranean.
