ARCHIVED - Spain delays administering fourth Covid dose to over 80s
Spain has chosen to wait for the arrival of new Pfizer and Moderna vaccines in October
The Public Health Commission in Spain made the decision on Thursday May 5 to hold off on offering a fourth Covid dose to people over the age of 80 as infections among this population continue to skyrocket.
Even though the Ministry of Health has been studying administering another vaccine for weeks now, the experts have decided to wait until new serums aimed specifically at Omicron come onto the market.
Alarmed by the rise in cases in vulnerable populations, communities such as Murcia, Galicia, Asturias and Andalucía have urged the Ministry to follow in the footstep of Portugal, which will begin administering a fourth dose as early as August.

In recent days, coronavirus infections and patient admissions have increased across Spain, but the risk in hospitals remains low or medium.
However, the consensus in Spain is to wait until the new messenger RNA vaccines under development by Pfizer and Moderna are ready; both pharmaceutical companies have already submitted the results of their clinical trials to the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and so the serums are expected by October.
