ARCHIVED - Spain embraces the four-day work week
Companies in Spain will soon receive aid to reduce working hours by 10%
The Spanish government will very soon invite companies interested in taking part of the four-day work week to apply for aid. The initiative was first announced back in December and businesses who get involved will each be granted up to 150,000 euros, with a total investment of 10 million euros in this venture.
Companies who receive the subsidies will have to commit to reducing the working day of its full-time, permanent staff by at least 10% over the next two years without reducing their pay, a structure that has already proven extremely successful in the UK, where 56 of the 61 businesses who took part in the pilot will continue with it indefinitely.
Here in Spain, the reduced working hours won’t apply to all staff. Instead, 30% of staff members will be asked to take part in companies with up to 20 workers while 25% of employees will be affected in workplaces of between 21 and 249 staff.
The government aid will be granted on a sliding scale depending on size to cover any expenses associated with the drop in hours, while 100% of training will be funded.
According to the Minister of Industry, Commerce and Tourism, Reyes Maroto, "with the implementation of this pilot program, we fulfil the commitment to offer SMEs a new way of organising their working hours by applying reductions in working time while maintaining wages and improving their business results. I encourage companies and workers to take advantage of this program.”
The Minister has also committed to expanding the scheme further in the future if this phase of the pilot project is successful.
