ARCHIVED - Spain falls behind Europe in administering booster vaccines
Ireland and Malta are leading the EU in terms of second and third doses
After being praised by the health authorities in Europe for the speed with which the original vaccination campaign was executed, Spain is now lagging well behind many other nations in administering the booster dose and is actually sitting well down the list, according to the European Centre for Disease Control (ECDC).
A third vaccination has only been administered to 11.8% of those aged over 12 years in Spain, which is seven points below the European average of 18.4%.
This coverage places it as the seventh of the 27 EU countries that have revaccinated the smallest number of their population, only ahead of Finland (10.9%), the Netherlands (8.5%), Croatia (7.7%), Latvia (7.5%), Romania (4.7%) and Bulgaria (3.1%).
Malta and Ireland are holding firm to the top spots, both for double jabs and the booster dose.
This data will not come as fresh news to Spain, and following a meeting between the autonomous leaders and President Sánchez on Wednesday December 22 it has been decided to utilise the military hospitals and boost the recruitment of health staff to speed up the vaccination process.
Mr Sánchez has set several targets, the first of which is to administer the third dose of the vaccine to 80% of the population aged between 60 and 69 before the end of the year.
