As agreed in the Official State Gazette (BOE) last Friday October 27, 2023, the calendar for 2024 will includes a total of 12 national holidays, of which 9 will be celebrated jointly in Spain as they are non-substitutable national holidays.
In addition, each of Spain’s 17 autonomous communities will be able to set its own two additional days’ holiday, one of which is normally taken on the Regional Day on the same day each year. Finally, every town, city or municipality can choose two more days to take as a local festivo, so there are a total of 16 days’ holiday.

There are other common holidays that each region may choose to move to another day, as is the case with March 28, Maundy Thursday. It will be a holiday throughout the country, except in the Valencian Community and Catalonia.
Then there is March 19, the Feast of San José or Father’s Day in Spain, which will be a holiday in Murcia and the Valencian Community. This is also the case on July 25, Santiago Apóstol, which is a holiday in Cantabria, Galicia, Madrid, Navarra and the Basque Country.
Puentes and long weekends in 2024
In 2024, several holidays will fall on a Monday or Friday, which allows people to take a long weekend. This will happen with the following dates:
- Monday January 1
- Friday November 1
- Friday December 6
Likewise, those regions that celebrate Holy Thursday (March 28) will have a four-day long weekend. Meanwhile, the communities of the Balearic Islands, Cantabria, Navarra, the Basque Country and La Rioja have made April 1 (Easter Monday) a holiday, so the long weekend will be five days.
