ARCHIVED - Spain imposes Covid travel restrictions on visitors from China
Travellers arriving in Spain from China will need a Covid cert or negative test
Spain has joined a host of other countries around the world in imposing coronavirus travel restrictions on visitors arriving from China after an emergency health conference was called on Friday December 30. The Minister of Health, Carolina Darias, said the measures are necessary to prevent the spread of Covid in Spain after the Chinese government abandoned its strict ‘Covid Zero’ policies last week.
The news is an abrupt about-turn, since just 24 hours ago the Spanish government ruled out imposing travel limitations like Italy, Japan, Taiwan and the US, instead stressing "the importance of continuing the path of European coordination in health policies."
Instead, anyone coming to Spain from China must be able to show that they are fully vaccinated with any of the jabs authorised by the WHO, or present a negative Covid test.
Fears are rising globally that the sudden relaxation of restrictions in China will lead to another mass outbreak. The country is facing another huge coronavirus wave as infections skyrocket.
The date when these measures come into force hasn’t been confirmed but it will most likely happen “before January 8,” coinciding with the date China will scrap its hotel quarantine requirements for people arriving in the country.
In the meantime, the Spanish Ministry of Health is taking “the necessary steps” in coordination with Aena to ensure the airports are equipped to check documentation and carry out antigen tests on passengers from China.
"The main concern lies in the possibility that new variants not controlled until now or different from the existing ones may appear in China. In this context, it is very important to take into account that as of January 8 they will no longer be in force the current restrictions on travellers, so a significant increase in passengers from China is expected worldwide," the minister explained.
