ARCHIVED - Spain is headed for a Covid wave worse than last Christmas
Intensive care admissions have risen 13% in the last week in Spain
The president of the Spanish Society of Immunology (SEI), Marcos Lopez Hoyos, has appealed to people to resume wearing masks indoors, warning that “in two or three weeks, there will be a lot of hospital impact” as coronavirus infections all across Spain rage out of control.
If the situation doesn’t resolve itself, he fears that the seventh wave “is going to be like Christmas, or worse.”
The expert believes that the new Omicron subvariants are “going to be widely transmitted and, since no measures are being put in place, there will be many healthcare problems."
"As long as we let the virus circulate at high levels, we will have problems," he added.
All research indicates that Covid will end up being a virus like the flu, but Mr Hoyos pointed out that the flu still kills people every year. Omicron also has one important difference: while influenza is seasonal, coronavirus circulates indiscriminately all year round.
According to the virologist, the latest strains aren’t more deadly but they do seem to be having a greater impact on older people, often with already compromised immune systems or underlying medical conditions. It is largely down to Spain’s successful vaccination campaign, he said, that hospitals haven’t already succumbed to the pressure.
While Europe is recommending rolling out a fourth Covid vaccine sooner rather than later, Spain’s Ministry of Health is determined to wait until the autumn, when serums designed to tackle the variants will be available.
"We hope to get a vaccine that protects against all coronaviruses, regardless of the variants," he explained, adding that without a doubt, Covid “has come to stay.”
