ARCHIVED - Spain lifts Covid checks at borders with France
Travellers will no longer have to present a Covid passport or negative test to pass over land into Spain
In another move towards restoring free travel within the EU, the Spanish Ministry of Health has announced that, from Thursday May 19, it will no longer be performing Covid control checks at the land borders between Spain and France.
These restrictions on land travel have been in place since March 26 2020.
The measure, which was published in the Official State Gazette (BOE), specifies:
“...taking into account the epidemiological situation in both countries and the current impact of the measure, it is considered appropriate to revoke the health control measures for people from France who arrive in Spain by land.”
Up until now, all travellers over the age of 12 wishing to travel by land from France into Spain had to provide a valid Covid passport or Covid test; from today, people will no longer have to present proof of vaccination, recovery from coronavirus or a PCR or antigen test.
The Spanish government has also previously removed the Covid certificate and test requirement at land borders between Spain and Portugal.
There is also positive news for British travellers, as the Minister of Transport has indicated that in the coming days, Spain will allow unvaccinated third country tourists enter as well.
The decision comes following a request by the European Union that nations remove as many coronavirus-related restrictions as possible immediately to facilitate free travel over the summer months and although Spain extended its ban on unjabbed non-EU visitors by another month just a few days ago, it appears that the decision is about to be overturned.
It’s important to remember, however, that passengers arriving into Spain by plane will still have to wear face masks on the flight.
