ARCHIVED - Spain prepares fourth dose vaccine campaign: Covid update September 21
Both hospital and intensive care admissions have jumped up this week in Spain while the incidence rate has hardly budged
On September 26, Spain’s Ministry of Health will begin its latest anti-Covid campaign, vaccinating people over the age of 80 and those living and working in nursing homes with the fourth coronavirus vaccination. From here, the schedule will move downwards until it reaches all over-60s.
The Minister of Health, Carolina Darias, expects around 44 million doses of the jab to arrive in the last four months of the year, 16 million in September alone.
“All the vaccines have a very high protection against Omicron,” the Minister confirmed.
Coronavirus infections
The Ministry of Health has registered 8,320 new coronavirus infections in Spain on Monday September 20, of which 4,607 were diagnosed in people over the age of 60.
This brings the total number of cases since the beginning of the pandemic to 13,393,196.
Cumulative incidence rate
The 14-day cumulative incidence rate in people over the age of 60 has only dipped very slightly since Friday to stand at 129.44 cases per 100,000 inhabitants (down from 129.80).
The 7-day incidence rate in citizens aged 60 or over has experienced another increase, rising from 62.70 cases to 64.48.
Those over 80 years of age have the highest level of risk of contagion, with an incidence of 190.69 cases, followed by septuagenarians (140.23), while the lowest level of transmission recorded is that of those in their sixties (89.68). All of these age groups, with the exception of the over 60s, have experienced a decline over the weekend.
There has been steady progress in reducing the incidence rate in the last week: the autonomous city of Ceuta maintains the best figure, plummeting from 17.77 cases per 100,000 inhabitants to just 13.18. It is followed by Andalucia, with 65.38 cases and Navarra (68.15).
Extremadura, Castilla y León and Castilla-La Mancha have the highest rates in the country, but none exceeds 250, which means that all of Spain is in a state of controlled circulation.
Hospitalisations and fatalities
There are currently 2,515 patients admitted to hospitals throughout Spain, (compared to 2,455 on Friday) while 159 people are being treated for more serious conditions in the country’s ICUs (an increase from 146).
These data mean that 2.09% of all hospital beds are occupied by Covid patients (up from 1.9% on the same day last week) while the occupancy rate in intensive care has increased to 1.84% from 1.7%.
A further 120 Covid-related fatalities were reported in Monday’s update, bringing the overall death toll in Spain to 113,845 people.
Vaccination data
As of September 21, 92.8% of the population over the age of 12 is fully vaccinated against Covid, which means that a total of 39,152,584 people have now received two doses.
In addition, 39,264,979 people (93.1%) have had at least one dose.
