Spain promises 1 billion euros in military aid to Ukraine
Coalition partners in the Spanish government are not all happy with the commitment
After a visit by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to Spain, the Spanish government has pledged to send 1.1 billion euros in military aid to the eastern European country.
As well as drawing consternation from Russia, the decision has sparked discord within Spain’s coalition government itself, with not all parties being on board with the increased military spending.
Ernest Urtasun, spokesman for the far-left Sumar party, criticised Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez for making the decision without the necessary transparency.

At a press conference in Madrid, Urtasun, who is also Spain’s Minister for Culture, demanded that Sánchez put the arms aid plan to a parliamentary vote, accusing the prime minister of bypassing his party.
Sumar, led by Deputy Prime Minister Yolanda Díaz, had previously opposed increasing defence spending to meet NATO’s target of 2% of GDP.
The new arms shipment from Spain to Ukraine includes Patriot anti-missile systems, additional Leopard battle tanks and thousands of rounds of ammunition, which will be delivered over the next 10 years.
Sánchez announced the aid package at a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Madrid. The move highlights Spain’s ongoing support for Ukraine amidst the conflict with Russia.
