Spain pulls off the double in a massive weekend for sport
Wins in both the Euro 2024 and Wimbledon secure Spain's place as world leader
Sunday July 14, 2024, will be marked in the calendar as an unforgettable day for Spain, who secured victories in both football and tennis, proving to the world once again that, when it comes to sport, no one does it quite like the Spanish.
Spain triumphed over England in the UEFA Euro 2024 Men's final, securing their place as European champions once again. In a thrilling match held in Berlin, Spain clinched victory with a 2-1 result, echoing their success in the 2023 Women's World Cup.
The match saw Nico Williams put Spain ahead just after the start of the second half. England's Cole Palmer equalised in the 73rd minute, but Spanish substitute Mikel Oyarzabal scored the decisive goal in the 87th minute, leaving England with no time to recover, even with the help of sub Oli Watkins, who put them through to the final so magnificently.
This defeat marks the second consecutive Euros where England has been beaten in the final, following their loss to Italy in 2021.
England captain Harry Kane, despite his impressive career, still seeks his first major trophy, adding another runners-up medal to his collection.
England's manager Gareth Southgate lamented his team's performance, citing their inability to maintain possession as a critical factor in their defeat.
In another display of Spanish prowess, Carlos Alcaraz successfully defended his Wimbledon title, defeating Novak Djokovic in a repeat of the previous year's final. Alcaraz dominated the match, winning in straight sets with scores of 6-2, 6-2, 7-6.
"It's going to be a really good day for Spanish people as well, with the Euro Cup."

This victory marks Alcaraz's fourth grand slam title and his first Channel Slam, having also won Roland Garros earlier in the year.
Alcaraz's win places him alongside Rafael Nadal as the only two Spaniards to win multiple Wimbledon singles titles, and his performance continues to solidify his place among tennis greats.
Both this weekend's victories underscore Spain's dominance on the international stage.
The Wimbledon final was graced by the presence of the Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton, who received a standing ovation on her arrival. Currently undergoing cancer treatment, she was accompanied by her daughter, Princess Charlotte, who received a handshake from Alcaraz after the match.
Prince William and Prince George also attended the Euro 2024 final, supporting the England team in their challenging match against Spain.
