ARCHIVED - Spain recalls antigen tests after Ireland reports false positives
The rapid Covid tests have been removed from pharmacies in Spain and Ireland
The Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products (AEMPS) has recalled from market a popular over-the-counter Covid rapid antigen test that is available from pharmacies across the country due to reports of “a possible increase in results of false positives”.
Manufactured by the Chinese pharmaceutical company Genrui Biotech, the glitch was first acknowledged by Ireland’s Health Products Regulatory Authority (HIPRA), who confirmed that they had received more than 500 complaints about the tests.
Both the Spanish and Irish authorities have temporarily suspended the sale of the Covid antigen tests “as a precautionary measure” while the matter is being investigated.
In Spain, the Genrui Biotech tests were widely available in Madrid, Getafe, Barcelona, Seville and Asturias.
