ARCHIVED - Spain says adios to mask wearing outdoors
Masks will no longer be required outside from February 10 in Spain
A mere 48 hours after President Sanchez caused outrage by extending the rule that masks must be worn outdoors, the Council of Ministers has announced that it will scrap the measure entirely on Tuesday February 8. The new Royal Decree will be published in the Official State Gazette (BOE) the following day with the idea that the new rule will come into force on Thursday February 10.
While countless experts have described the use of masks outdoors as simply “cosmetic” and “meaningless” since it is known that the vast majority of infections occur indoors, the Minister of Health, Carolina Darias, has defended its application, insisting that it “has been a very important non-pharmacological measure throughout the pandemic, it acts as a barrier against aerosols and we already said that it was going to be [compulsory outdoors] for the time strictly necessary”.
Now, with the cumulative incidence rate dropping for nine consecutive days and ICU pressure declining consistently, the Ministry will convene an extraordinary Interterritorial Health Council on Monday February 7 to approve the elimination of this restriction.
