ARCHIVED - Spain scraps quarantine for unvaccinated close contacts
Covid experts ask for ‘extreme caution’ from primary contacts of infected patients in Spain
The Public Health Commission has decided to eliminate quarantines for close contacts of coronavirus cases, whether they are vaccinated or not. The measure, announced on Tuesday, will come into force from next Saturday, March 5.
Up until this point, only double jabbed primary contacts of Covid-positive patients could avoid the self-isolation period, so the new measure fundamentally affects people who have not yet been vaccinated. It will also impact younger children aged between 5 and 11 years old, since only 18.4% of this population group has been fully immunised.
The decision to relax the measure has been made given the positive health data in Spain in recent days, with hospital and ICU pressure dwindling considerable. However, the Commission has still asked for extreme vigilance during the ten days after exposure to someone diagnosed with coronavirus.

The experts recommend that social interactions be limited during this period, that close contacts wear masks at all times and maintain adequate hand hygiene. Contact with vulnerable people should, of course, be avoided completely.
With the new rule, only people infected with Covid must quarantine.
