ARCHIVED - Spain vaccination update September 7: improvement in vaccine rate for younger population
More than 34 million people across Spain have now been fully vaccinated against Covid
As the summer season comes to a close and the start of a new school term looms, the Spanish government is upping the ante on its vaccination strategy, with the vast majority of centres now offering walk-in services without appointments for all those yet to receive the Covid jab. Even with the anticipated slow-down in August, 34,418,544 people in Spain have now been double jabbed or had the Janssen mono-vaccine. This means that 72.5% of the population is now fully inoculated, surpassing the original ‘herd immunity’ figure proposed by the Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez.
The Ministry of Health is now redoubling its efforts to vaccinate the youngest target age group, those aged between 12 and 19 who have been responsible for the vast majority of infections during this wave of coronavirus. According to the Ministry’s most recent data, published on Tuesday September 8, 45.4% of these youngsters have now received two doses. This number is still far from where it should be, but the rate of vaccination for this age group has in fact increased from 27.2% compared to the same day last week.
Vaccination percentages and numbers by age group
- 80+: 100% / 2,890,544 people
- 70 to 79: 98.5% / 3,901,366 people
- 60 to 69: 96% / 5,121,477 people
- 50 to 59: 92.4% / 6,498,537 people
- 40 to 49: 84.3% / 6,655,515 people
- 30 to 39: 69.8% / 4,346,313 people
- 20 to 29: 65.5% / 3,239,584 people
- 12 to 19: 45.4% / 1,765,208 people
Vaccination speed also varies widely across regions in Spain. While almost all autonomous communities have now fully vaccinated the more vulnerable older population, vaccination rates differ when it comes to younger age groups. Cantabria, for example, has only double jabbed 13.4% of those aged between 12 and 19, while at the opposite end of the scale are the Balearic and Canary Islands with 62.4% and 62.3% respectively, closely followed by the Region of Murcia, at 58.6%.
Although more than 70% of the population in Spain has now been fully inoculated and the 14-day cumulative incidence rate continues to fall, the government has claimed that herd immunity remains elusive, and given the prevalence of the Delta variant, a 90% vaccine target has now been proposed.
