Spain warns UK holidaymakers to avoid illegal parties or risk massive fines
Alcohol should only be consumed in licensed bars and restaurants in Spain

The British Embassy in Spain has warned Britons to avoid unlicensed parties on the island hotspots of Ibiza and Mallorca this summer at the risk of being slapped with massive fines. Although illegal, these gatherings are still rife in the popular party destinations and the Balearic Islands government has already stressed that drunk and disorderly Brits will be severely punished this year.
An Embassy spokesperson said: "There have been a number of serious accidents involving people attending irregular commercially-promoted parties in villas and private homes on the islands of Ibiza and Mallorca.
"Licensed clubs and bars are required to meet safety and security standards, including emergency exits and capacity limits, and to have trained licensed security staff. Irregular commercial parties may not meet these standards."
The warning comes after the Department of Foreign Affairs reminded holidaymakers that consuming alcohol in public places, except for licensed bars and restaurants, is also forbidden in Madrid and on the Balearic and Canary Islands.
"You should take care of your belongings, ensure you know where emergency exits are located and not take unnecessary risks. Heavy fines may be imposed by local authorities to anyone attending irregular commercial parties," the Embassy added.
According to the local government, these illegal gatherings have increased “exponentially” in the last couple of years, when nightclubs and discos were closed as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
Anyone caught attending unlicensed parties can be fined between 300 and 300,000 euros depending on the seriousness of the infraction, while property owners renting out their villas or apartments for such illicit activities will face sanctions of between 100,000 and 300,000 euros.
