ARCHIVED - Spain will not impose restrictions before the New Year
Communities in Spain will ignore the traffic light system and hope the situation stabilises over Christmas
The Spanish government amended its Covid traffic light system upwards just last month, increasing the risk thresholds so that communities could avoid imposing restrictions as cases in Spain skyrocket. However, despite the fact that the cumulative incidence rate has soared to 323 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, the Minister of Health has agreed with regional authorities who have categorically refused to implement restrictions of any kind until after the New Year celebrations.
In just two weeks, the number of coronavirus cases has increased by 70%, with regions such as the Basque Country, Navarra and Aragon now in a critical situation. Nevertheless, the health experts believe that the closure of schools for the Christmas holidays and the start of the vaccination campaign for children aged between 5 and 11 should limit the circulation of the virus in the coming weeks.
Currently, the age group most affected by Covid is those under 12 years of age, with an incidence that exceeds 547 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. They are followed, with rates higher than 330 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, by those aged between 30 and 49 years and those between 60 and 69. According to the latest data provided by the Ministry of Health, 24% of those over 70 have not yet received their booster dose.
Most regional leaders agree that vaccinating youngsters in the next step in controlling Covid, and so on Wednesday December 15 communities will begin vaccinating children between the ages of 5 and 11 with the first dose of the Pfizer jab. Around 1.3 million vaccines will arrive on December 13 with a further two deliveries expected in January.
