ARCHIVED - Covid incidence in children doubles in two weeks in Spain
Communities in Spain will begin receiving vaccines for children next week
The decision to vaccinate younger children in Spain has not been taken lightly and has been met with much concern by parents, but the health authorities consider it a vital step in bringing the sixth wave of the pandemic under control.
The figures speak for themselves: at the end of October the cumulative incidence rate among under 12s, while still the highest in the country, was steadily declining along with all other groups, to a point where it reached just 54 cases per 100,000 inhabitants on October 18. Now, a month and a half later, this number has skyrocketed and sits close to 500 cases.
Moreover, the national average is now double what it was two weeks ago, when 233 cases were registered for this age group on November 24.
Of course, up until now youngsters didn’t have the option of getting vaccinated, and during the last wave the majority of the responsibility was heaped upon the un-jabbed, with most of the blame falling on children and adolescents for spreading Covid in social circles.
All hopes now lie with the inoculation of children aged between 5 and 11, as the autonomous communities will begin receiving the first reduced-strength Pfizer doses early next week.
For now, the government is desperately trying to stem the spread of the virus in the run-up to the holiday season, a battle it appears to be losing as the incidence has shot up to 290 cases.
The latest Ministry of Health data show that the group aged 30 to 49 (excepting young children) is the one with the highest incidence by far, a statistic which many communities are hoping to change with the introduction of the Covid passport.
