ARCHIVED - Spain will offer 3-day menstrual leave to women each month
Women suffering from painful periods will soon be able to take sick leave in Spain
A radical reform of Spain’s abortion law is expected to be approved next Tuesday, May 17 that includes legalising terminations without parental consent for 16-year-olds, expanding sex education to younger children and providing free contraception and tampons in schools.
Another novelty of the law will involve up to three days of sick leave per month for women who suffer from painful periods caused by cysts, fibroids and endometriosis, among other complaints.
This new norm, according to Spain’s Minister for Equality Irene Montero, represents a “paradigm shift” whereby sexual health is not oriented exclusively to pregnancy, but also covers other areas such as reproductive and menstrual health.
Countries such as Japan, South Korea, Indonesia and Zambia already offer menstrual leave as part of work contracts, but Spain will soon become the first nation in Europe to introduce the measure.
Angela Rodriguez, the Secretary of State for Equality, said: “If someone has an illness, a temporary disability is granted. The same should happen with menstruation — allowing a woman with a very painful period to stay at home.”
In addition, Spain will soon offer free sanitary pads and tampons in schools and to vulnerable women, while VAT will be removed from feminine hygiene products for sale in supermarkets.
“One in four women cannot choose the feminine hygiene products she wants to buy for economic reasons,” Ms Rodriguez added.
“That’s why we propose for them to be dispensed free of charge in educational and social centres.”
