Spain nets British drug trafficker wanted since 2019
The suspect is wanted for a major cocaine smuggling case in Portugal

National Police officers have arrested a 36-year-old British citizen at Tenerife South Airport, the subject of a European Arrest Warrant issued by Portuguese authorities for drug trafficking offenses.
The arrest occurred in early March after agents at the Tenerife South Airport Border Post detected the possible arrival of the fugitive on a flight from the East Midlands.
Officers pulled the suspect in for questioning and a passport control unit was sent to verify his identity. Once this was done, the fugitive was arrested.
The man was wanted for his involvement in a major drug trafficking case in Madeira, Portugal, in 2019. According to the indictment, the detainee and six other people were intercepted by the Portuguese Criminal Police outside a hotel in Madeira carrying a total of 11.465 kilos of cocaine. The drugs were wrapped up in several packages and hidden in backpacks and handbags.
At the time, the story was huge in the Portuguese and UK media.
The suspect has been remanded in custody to await extradition to Portugal.
