Spain's Mediterranean coast is quietly becoming a major destination for swinger tourism
From Murcia and Alicante to the Costa del Sol and beyond, liberal leisure is growing fast along southern Spain's coastline this summer
Spain has long been known for its sunshine, beaches and relaxed attitude to life, but there's another kind of tourism quietly flourishing along its Mediterranean coast this summer, and it's growing faster than many people might expect.According to data from Wyylde, a social network and dating platform specialising in sexual exploration, the regions of Murcia, Alicante, Málaga, Almería and Las Palmas have emerged as the five main hotspots in Spain for so-called liberal leisure, or swinger tourism, during the summer season. The concept covers trips made by individuals and couples looking to explore consensual partner-swapping experiences in relaxed, holiday settings.
For most of the year, Madrid and Barcelona dominate this scene, thanks to their size and a well-established supply of adult venues and events. But as temperatures rise and the holidays begin, Wyylde detects a consistent shift towards the coast. Hotels, villas and private outdoor spaces with pools, terraces and gardens become the preferred settings, replacing the more discreet indoor venues typical of city life.
The platform notes that these gatherings "don't adhere to a specific duration," ranging from a few hours to several days, but there's a clear preference for unhurried, holiday-style environments in summer. As Wyylde puts it, sunny destinations "invite us to disconnect, slow down and experience unusual things with greater freedom."
Alicante stands out as one of the leading destinations on the Mediterranean coast, combining attractive beaches with an established adult scene and a strong international following, particularly among French visitors. Los Tusales beach, naturally sheltered among dunes and vegetation, is specifically highlighted as a key location.
Murcia features prominently too, offering what Wyylde describes as "experiences associated with coastal tourism and couples' getaways," with Cala Morena in the Cartagena district of El Portús cited as a notable spot.
On the Costa del Sol, activity centres around the stretch between Torremolinos and Marbella, with Playa Marina in Mijas and the dune area of Cabopino both mentioned. Marbella in particular draws a significant international crowd, including British and German visitors.
Almería, with its naturist character, finds its focus around Vera Playa, while Las Palmas de Gran Canaria rounds off the picture, with Maspalomas described by Wyylde as concentrating "specialised spaces, accommodation geared towards this clientele, and continuous activity."
The shift in attitudes is backed by research too. According to the Centre for Sociological Research, almost 15% of people surveyed said they had practised or were open to non-monogamous relationships, a figure that points to a clear and continuing change in how people approach intimacy and travel.
