Spaniard becomes first woman in world to marry a hologram
AILex Sibouwlingen, whose surname is a mix of the three surnames of Alicia Framis’ Dutch ex-boyfriends, is a hologram husband

Alicia Framis and AILex Sibouwlingen tied the knot last Saturday November 9. Nothing so unusual about that, except for the fact that the groom is a mere function of technology. AILex Sibouwlingen, whose name derives from a mixture of Alicia’s ex-boyfriends’ names, is a hologram.
The catalan woman’s wedding is the first between a human person and a hologram. Alicia writes poems for him, listens to his complaints and discusses his concerns. Of course, he only recognises her voice.
The ‘hybrid couple’ are the first to unite technology and emotions, in an art performance called ‘The First Woman to Marry a Hologram’. The wedding took place at the Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen museum in Rotterdam, through a kind of ritual that Alicia herself invented with a specialist in spirituality.
Some of Framis’s family and friends and some curious visitors to the museum attended. While in traditional weddings fidelity is the main commitment, Framis and AILex promised to accompany each other with empathy and mutual care.
The ceremony, which can be seen in the many ‘stories’ that Alicia has uploaded on her Instagram account, began with the arrival of the bride in an elevator wearing a spectacular dress as peculiar as the wedding.
The dress is a dark purple dress, crowned with a flower headband, and is equipped with solar panels that allow the battery that gives ‘life’ to her now husband to be charged.
AILex’s physical appearance was created two years ago from a mix of Alicia’s ex-boyfriends.
“It’s a companion hologram, it explores the coexistence of humans and technology in a different way,” admits the newlywed.
The idea for a hologram partner all came about when the Catalan creator was enjoying a residence near Palo Alto, California, where when she came home she felt lonely and a bit scared.
The idea was to develop a companion that would help Framis to be happy and live better, “something that could be a good solution for people with Alzheimer’s, depression, autism or who suffer from other traumas,” says this performance and innovation artist.
Holography is an advanced photography technique that consists of creating three-dimensional images based on the use of light to offer an exact reproduction of the real object. This projection is combined with artificial intelligence and allows the character to interact.
And what about the food served at this most original of weddings? In addition to her own wedding dress, the artist designed, together with the the Dutch food art museum LAM, a menu with molecular food for both humans and humanoids.
