Spanish airline suffers cyberattack that leads to theft of customer bank details
Spanish company Air Europa had advised customers to cancel their cards as a precaution
Spain’s third-largest airline, Air Europa, was the subject of a massive cyberattack on Monday October 9 that resulted in the theft of customers’ banking information, including card numbers, expiry dates and CVV security codes.
In an email to its passengers, the carrier confirmed that “a cybersecurity incident was recently detected in one of our systems consisting of possible unauthorised access to your bank card data.”
While Air Europa hasn’t specified how many customers may have been compromised, it did explain that the criminals were able to hack the system that manages online payments. However, the company quickly detected the breach and the website has once again been secured, the airline said, “guaranteeing the correct functioning of the service.”
Air Europa has indicated that at the moment “there is no evidence that the leak was used to commit any fraud” and that it is continuing to analyse what happened, the origin of the attack and the use, if any, of the stolen information.
However, given the scale of the threat, the airline has recommended that clients take the following steps as a precaution:
- Identify the card used to make payment(s) on the Air Europa website.
- Contact your bank.
- Request the cancellation and/or replacement of said card to avoid possible fraudulent use of your information.
- Do not provide any personal information, such as your PIN number, via telephone, text message or email, even if the caller claims to be from your bank.
- Do not click on links that warn you of fraudulent operations. Contact your bank directly by verifiable means.
- Save any potential evidence of possible unauthorised use of your card and report it to the State Security Forces and Bodies.
Customers who have any concerns or queries relating to their privacy can direct them to the dedicated email address, degadopd@aireuropa.com, which is manned by Air Europa’s Data Protection Officer, who can also be reached on +34 911 401 501.
