Spanish cosmetic surgery clinic embroiled in manslaughter probe over death of British tourist
The UK holidaymaker died after undergoing breast augmentation surgery in Palma de Mallorca
The manager of a private aesthetics clinic in Palma de Mallorca has been arrested and charged with manslaughter following the death of a British woman who underwent a breast augmentation procedure at the clinic last September.
The woman, who has not been named, died suddenly from a series of medical complications just hours after the operation, which was performed by a surgeon who has since passed away.
According to reports, the manager, who was also an anaesthesiologist, was arrested by officers from the National Police's Homicide Group outside the clinic in Palma. The surgeon who carried out the procedure was also arrested and accused of homicide due to serious recklessness. A third surgeon fled to Switzerland but reportedly died of a terminal illness before he could be apprehended.
Investigations revealed that the British woman had a heart defect, which resulted in 25% of the organ not functioning correctly, a serious issue that was not properly addressed prior to the operation. Officials believe that the surgeons knew about her condition but failed to perform the necessary preoperative procedures, leading to her tragic death.
The victim had travelled to Mallorca from the UK specifically for the breast augmentation procedure. Her family was informed of her death shortly after it occurred.
The surgeon who performed the procedure was described in reports as a well-established professional “who has spent decades working in Palma and other European countries”. His nationality remains unknown, although it’s believed that he resided outside of Spain.
The manager of the clinic has been released from the Palma Penitentiary Centre, where he was serving a sentence for medical negligence and fraud, in order to face new charges related to the woman's death. The investigation is ongoing, and officials are working to determine the full extent of the clinic's responsibilities in the matter.
