ARCHIVED - Spanish government extends fuel discount until October
The majority of the crisis measures implemented as a result of the war in Ukraine will be extended by three months in Spain
The President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, has announced that the “urgent measures” adopted to ease the financial burden on citizens caused by the war in Ukraine will be extended for three months, until the beginning of October.
“We are going to continue protecting the families and companies of our country while the effects of the war last,” the president said. His announcement comes just one day after he confirmed that his economic experts were looking at extending the measures, which were due to expire on June 30.
Thus, the 20 cent per litre fuel discount will remain in place, although the government has not ruled out altering how it is applied, so that those most in need benefit rather than the entire population. In addition, taxes on electricity bills have been reduced by 60%, the Social Bonus has been extended to two million households and the Minimum Vital Income has been increased.
Unfortunately, the current measures have so far failed to cushion the escalation in fuel prices, and this week petrol reached 2 euros per litre for the first time ever. For this reason, government sources have indicated that while “substantially” all of the crisis measures will be extended until October, they are open to “touching up or improving” some of them.
When the government launched the plan two months ago, it allocated a total of 6,000 million euros for direct aid and tax reductions and 10,000 million to finance projects through ICO credits. There are 12 measures in all, with the aim of “fairly distributing” aid to families, workers and companies.
Spain and Portugal have also reached an agreement with the EU to put a temporary cap on the price of natural gas used to generate electricity, which should lower energy bills over the next 12 months.
