ARCHIVED - Spanish government greenlights huge wind farm off the coast of Malaga
The huge energy plant would have the capacity to supply almost 650,000 homes in Malaga province

The construction of a massive offshore wind farm in the Alborán Sea off the coast Fuengirola and Marbella, Malaga province, is a step closer to becoming a reality after the Spanish government gave the project the go-ahead.
The first hurdle in building the plant, which would have the capacity to supply almost 650,000 homes in Malaga province, according to an expert in renewable energies from the University of Malaga, was overcome on Tuesday when Maritime Space Management Plans (POEM) approved the scheme.
This green light clears the way for the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge to put out to tender applications from companies to build the large wind farm.
It is hoped this would take place around mid-2023, but looks set to be delayed until closer to the end of the year.
The wind farm will incorporate floating turbines on an area equivalent to 30,000 football pitches, and the government's Offshore Wind Roadmap foresees the installation of up to three gigawatts of energy.
The initial plan was to locate the turbines 13km from the coast, but an alternative location 22km, where the visual impact will be reduced, has been approved. There are also proposals to build offshore plants in the Granada and Almeria provinces of Andalucía.
