ARCHIVED - Spanish president to travel to Ukraine to meet with Zelenski
The president also announced that the Spanish Embassy in Ukraine will reopen
Spanish Government sources have confirmed that President Pedro Sanchez will travel to the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv in the coming days to meet with President Volodimir Zelenski and attend other official engagements.
The full details of the trip have been kept secret for security reasons, with officials claiming only that it will be “very soon.” However, Mr Sanchez announced the reopening of the Spanish Embassy in Ukraine yesterday which was closed after the Russian invasion, and it is expected that the president will be present for the occasion.
“Spain is with Ukraine, and we are against Putin,” Mr Sanchez said in an interview on Monday April 18 after announcing the reopening of the embassy, which he called “a sign once again of the commitment of the Government of Spain and Spanish society to the Ukrainian people.”

The staff of the Spanish diplomatic delegation and its ambassador, Silvia Cortes Marin, were evacuated on February 25 after Ukraine was invaded.
Several national leaders have already travelled to Kyiv to meet with President Zelenski, as have the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, and the head of the European Commission, Ursula Von der Leyen.
“This is not only a war between Russia and Ukraine, it is also a war of Putin against what the European Union represents, in terms of fundamental rights, democracy, defence of freedom and a mode of prosperity based on social justice,” Mr Sanchez said, adding that if “we did nothing, if we allowed Putin to devastate Ukraine and look the other way, the cost would be even higher.”
