ARCHIVED - Spanish truck driver indefinite strike gets underway
The industrial action throughout Spain is expected to cost €600M per day
The second transport strike of the year has kicked off on Monday November 14 and is expected to cost the Spanish economy a staggering 600 million euros per day if it continues into Black Friday and the Christmas season. Truckers will also take part in a demonstration at the Ministry of Transport in Madrid on this first day of industrial action, with the expectation that workers from the agricultural, livestock and hospitality sectors will join in.
The National Platform for the Defence of the Transport Sector, the representative of self-employed truck drivers, has called the strike on the basis that the agreements made with the government in March aren’t being complied with, leaving workers in “practically” the same situation as at the beginning of the year.
The historic strike that took place in March lasted for 20 days and caused supply chain problems in several areas of the country. Ultimately, several measures were agreed upon, including a fuel subsidy of 20 cents per litre, 450 million euros in aid for the sector and a legal guarantee that carriers would not have to work at a loss.
However, Manuel Hernández, spokesperson for the platform and leader of the strikes, insists that the law “is not being respected” and confirmed that an indefinite strike would commence if he didn’t receive a document “with serious and signed commitments” by Sunday November 13. No such document arrived.
Now, truck drivers are calling on the government to implement a formal inspection plan to monitor compliance with the legislation on truck loading and unloading and contract prices. They have also demanded tougher sanctions for companies who hire truckers under illegal conditions and an increase in the number of sector inspectors.
For now, the Spanish government is waiting to see if the industrial action receives the same amount of support as the March demonstrations, which could result in a worsening supply crisis over the Christmas holidays.
