ARCHIVED - Spanish flight from hell as drunk British couple smoke and abuse passengers
Another intoxicated passenger was removed from the Tenerife flight after urinating in his seat
July certainly hasn’t been a good month for easyJet, with customers furious over countless delays and cancellations caused by strikes and a consumer watchdog in the UK taking the airline to court over its negligent treatment of passengers.
A different kind of chaos erupted at the beginning of the month onboard a flight from Liverpool Airport to Tenerife, when the plane had to be diverted to Lisbon as a result of two drunken passengers abusing other travellers and smoking in the toilets.
Hans Mahrla, embarking on his first and long-awaited holiday since the coronavirus pandemic began, said the trip was “the flight from hell,” describing the “shameful” way the couple behaved after they cracked open bottles of booze they had purchased in the duty free.
Mr Mahrla said: “An announcement was made telling people they should not be drinking duty free stuff and smoking was also prohibited on the plane.
"Next thing we know they closed the toilets at the back of the plane because they found cigarette butts in there.
“Ten minutes later the pilot said we were landing in Lisbon - the woman started to kick off and threaten other passengers. There was quite a bit of commotion on the plane."
Once the flight touched down in Portugal, the pair was escorted off the plane by police officers, but the nightmare was only beginning. Another “comatose” passenger tried to use the bathroom while the aircraft was on the tarmac and was forced to remain in his seat by cabin crew, only to end up urinating where he sat.
Mr Mahrla said that the urine was "pouring down the row behind him".
He too was booted off the aircraft before the flight eventually set back off for Spain almost two hours later.
A spokesperson for easyJet said: “easyJet can confirm that flight EZY7169 from Liverpool to Tenerife on July 6 diverted to Lisbon and was met by police as a result of two passengers on board behaving disruptively.
"Whilst such incidents are rare, we take them very seriously, and do not tolerate abusive or threatening behaviour on board. The safety and wellbeing of customers and crew is our highest priority."
Just this weekend, a passenger on an easyJet flight from Belfast to Alicante was arrested after being caught smoking in the toilets.
